New Mini-Album (promo)
Finally this week, my new mini-album (promo) arrived. Some months ago, after getting much encouragement from d i s t e l, I started working on mastering six tracks with the help of a friend who has some experience.
Production
A sobering experience, because you find out that though the mix wasn't bad, the mastering process can make your music sound so much better. You learn alot from listening so intently and with the right amount of EQ'ing (and the help of some magical algorithms) and a spot of multibandcompressing, suddenly it sounds exactly right.
Levelling the tracks for cd was harder than I'd imagined, since you have to imagine yourself an objective listener. I can hear the power and volume of a deep bassline in one track, but does it have enough overall volume to not drop below the rest of the tracks? How do you perceive volume, when it comes to different frequencies. With the help of a friend, I managed to get the result I wanted.
Sound
The choice for these tracks was made on the basis of the character of the sound they have. This is particularly true for the first five tracks. The sound is very warm, lush and analogue. The tracks were created with mostly vintage synthesizers, over the course of one year, from August 2007 to late July 2008.
Artwork
The artwork is based on a beautiful photograph taken by a good friend, who by knowing me well, helped me find the visual atmosphere I was looking for. The artwork is dark, melancholic, yet colorful and full of reflections. I think this is also true for the music.
