Korg • WaveStation SR


The WaveStation SR is a repackaged Wavestation designed to provide you with all the Wavestation sounds you could ever ask for in a more compact and less expensive MIDI Module. It is a 1-unit rackmount tone module that has all the raw power and sounds of the famous WavestationEX and A/D synths! The SR maintains the same advanced Vector Synthesis and Wave Sequencing synthesis method from a 4MB ROM card. While managing to increase the MIDI mixing and 16 part MIDI multitimbrality and shrinking the massive synth no sound nor edit parameter was sacrificed! Every parameter can still be tweaked, although much more tedious, however that is the trade-off for a compact, portable and richly multitimbral synthesizer module. Included among its vast array of amazing synthesizer sounds is 1 drum kit with 30 sounds making the SR an ideal centerpiece for any MIDI studio. Wavestations are used by Orbital, The Future Sound of London and Gary Numan.


Soundworld A.D. Posted 266 days ago Don't let the size of this little monster fool you. It came fully loaded with no fewer than 550 cool patches, including some of cool wavesequence jams (like "Ski Jam" or "The Wave Song") popularized by Jan Hammer and many others. I laughed when I read planetplayer's message about the battery running out. I turned mine on one day to find that all 3 banks of RAM patches had gone bye-bye! I had the battery replaced, but I dearly miss those 150 patches! Heed the messages below about trying to edit with this thing unless you have a S/W-based editor. I have the manual, and this thing...well, let's just say it is a DEEP machine. But, if you have the time and patience, you will be richly rewarded !

The Wavestation for the preset-playing masses, coming in 1U rackmount form with styling derived from the more common Korg 0-series rack boxes. The patcherati will appreciate the provision of eight banks of ROM performances (rather than the one found on the keyboard and AD), although performances and patches could also be programmed to make use of the eight banks of wave sequences. (All the SR data structures can refer freely across all eleven banks.) There are some general enhancements to the MIDI control specification, such as pan response, although the SR is backwards-compatible with earlier units via a rather sophisticated two-level sys-ex format. (I drive my SR as if it were an A/D, and transfer sound banks to it without problems, although single patch and performance transfer seems problematic for some reason I've not tracked down.)

The overriding drawback of the SR is the 16 by 2 character LCD which makes programming fiddly; the vector joystick is also absent. The user interface is actually quite respectable, but the fact remains that the Wavestation voice architecture is deeply heirarchical and does not easily lend itself to periscope programming, although every parameter is accessible.

The SR is a good deal if you're after 550 presets. It's also a compact, fully-fledged Wavestation if you have a decent computer-based editor or are happy with the front panel. The manual on its own is well structured and even pictures the effects algorithms, making it a useful document for owners of the other Wavestations.

this is a Wavestation SR playing the StereoVocoder2 effect on its own without sequencer and external FX.

I use two rhytmic wavesequences as modulator beeing x-faded via vector-synthesis ('joystick-ac'-midi-cc-slider), a sawtooth-wave as carrier (chord).

External Software (MidiOx) generating a 130 bpm midi-clock signal is used to sync the waveseqs to. I'm also having a Midi-Switch to send a Note (A-0) triggering the beat-loop (tune-slope = 0). So I am able to play live with both hands. The Filters are controlled via MIDI-1- and MIDI-2-cc (sliders).

Btw. I used the small two-line display for all editing work which, in my opinion, is a faster way to achive results than SoundDiver or MidiQuest.

In practice, the box is so simple that this isn't a big deal, but be aware of it.

The LARGEST programs only have 14 parameters, most only have four to six parameters. There are a total of 23 possible parameters, but only fourteen are used in any given algorythym.

Some of the parameter display descriptions are a little cryptic, but hey with only fourteen of them, you'll figure it out after a while.

Like most of the older Digitech stuff, you basically push an arrow button to go through the parameters in sequential fashion, and use up or down arrows to increase or decrease the parameter.

One nice touch is that there are a series of 12 led's on the front panel, these tell you which effects are engaged in a given program, since the algorythym is the first parameter, and is stuff like A1, A2, through A12 or so, the algo parameter doesn't mean a lot until you look at the front panel and figure out which effects are part of that algorythym set.

Editing patches is a piece of cake, I really like programming this thing because it's so easy. Programming my TSR-24 is like nuclear physics in comparison.

Since there is no algorythym routing or design, you just pick the effects you want, then scroll through and setup the reverb and delay times, and chorus depth or whatever to what you want, along with the associated levels.

One gotcha is that with some of the programs, you can change the level of some of the effects, but not others. This mainly affects the multi programs that use delay.

I have a provisional manual (dated January 15th, 198, I never bothered to get a final manual because the box is so easy to use.

The manual is pretty good though, way better than the two roland manuals I had and used back then (the DSP 128 was my third digital F/X, at the time I also owned a Roland SDE-1000 delay and an SRV-2000 reverb.

I'm not sure of the firmware version, but mine has been upgraded.

Actually mine has been upgraded to "DSP 128 Plus" specs. I'll cover this a bit later (and actually with a separate review), but the update was a user installable chip that added a few new parameters, including an "Ultimate

DSP128 Overview

It has MIDI SysEx and responds to CC.

Though it has no editing knobs, it's very easy to use because of its simple parameter structures. The sound is grungy because of 12kHz limitation, but it gives a unique digital lo-fi taste.



Effect Types

The "Filter" is just a hi-cut filter with coarse parameter settings (the highest is at 12kHz). The delay time is long (up to 1.8s).
