Anybody know hoe they did that organ like sound (the lead) in that early 90's hit 'Don't you want my love' by Felix? Hints, tips, links? Could it have been a D50 or a QS300?

i think it could have been a korg m1, pretty much the stable for organ sounds in the early 80's

Love the tune and the organ riff, huge,I can't really remember the sound exactly, but it was definatly filtered and layered. You dont have an mp3 clip of it by any chance? I'd love to hear it again. The last time I heard that was on "match of the day" of all places, for goal of the season nominees a year or two ago!

Post a clip.
See, this is exactly the reason that Audio Galaxy shouldn't have been killed.

Managed to find it and download it. Giving it an analysis at the moment...
It could be any number of keyboards, actually. It's a rock organ sound (BX-3 type) mixed with some type of breathy pad (or other non-spiky waveform with high frequency content, or maybe the original sample had lots of high frequencies anyway). It's certainly got the gain up on the high frequencies, is going through a distortion (or maybe and overdriven rotary effect), has got mono delay with the feedback time at 16th's of a bar, and has got a flanger on it.
I've got a not bad recreation of it that I've just done on my Trinity.
Give me a minute to record it and stuff....

Here y'are. It's not identical, but you should get the idea. I've a slight suspicion that the original also has a fat PWM sound mixed in there quite quietly. This sound is exactly as described above.
The original also has a line with a bell-type sound in there going [A6 D7 A6 D6 repeat] with [D5 A5 D5 A4 repeat] alongside it.

a good try Mike...impressive indeed! I wonder how Felix (same guy as one of the peeps in Faithless, I think) managed to make an organ sound so huge and fat.

There is an old Future Music article about Rollo and the making of this actual track. It is quite an old article and he talks about how he made that track in his garden shed while he had a job in the dole office. I can't remember the exact keyboard he used but it was an old, crappy one. He used just this and a 909 to do the whole track.
If I remember correctly, he layered up 2 sawtooth waveforms and a sine wave for added bottom. Then he put a big gated reverb across the stabs.
He also says how when he meet Sister bliss for the first time, she told him that the phrasing of the lead line didn't make musical sense!
I'll try and find the article when I get home.

two saws and a sine? Wouldn't that sound like a pizzi? I *think* that's how FM used to describe the making of a faithless pizzi...But if you could trace the article I'd be much obliged.

That's right, Future Music ran an article on how to make leads. Faithless, Daft Punk and Portishead were all featured. The Faithless bit was talking about how they made the pizz sound on Insomnia.
I'm pretty sure he used the same technique for the lead in the Felix track. I could be wrong although I'm pretty sure. I'll hunt tonight and post in the morning.

Are you sure? IT's sound totally different...it's an organ not a pizzi thingy...I think faithless got their pizzi from a Roland JD.
p.s. I guess were getting old since we actually know that a pizzicato is NOT some pokemon species but Italian for a plucked string.
