Ik heb mijn eerste you-tube filmpje gemaak over mijn gereorganizeerde modular - gelieve in HD te bekijken. Sommige onder jullie kunnen hier stukjes van julle vorig eigendom herkennen ...



Uitleg over de patch:
"The basic sequence is played by the Livewire AFG with random pulse width (controlled by S&H type output from the Makenoise Wogglebug) and harmonic modulation (controlled by a Doepfer LFO). Pulse and animated pulse outputs go in to a lowpass-gate (Makenoise QMMG), Buchla/Serge's take on a VCA/low pass filter. The low-pass gates are controlled by the clock from the analog sequencer and a bit of echo from Doepfers VC DSP effects is mixed in.

Pitch and tempo is controlled by a 8-step sequence from the Analog Systems RS-200 analog sequencer, quantized and transposed by 2 Analogue Solutions sequencers. The second sequencer steps every 32th step of the first, the third every 8th step of the second, so the basic sequence is 32x8x8=2048 steps long). There is some random switching of the 3 channels of the RS-200 programmed to nearly - but not quite - the same sequence, with slides introduced in the third channel.

The "drums" are played by a Dotcom system, again clocked from the RS-200 through a clock divider. The 4/4 beat is made by the dotcom VCO through a lowpass filter, with a short envelope. The "hihats" are some noise through another lowpass filter with short evelope and then treated with a Korg PME-40x analog multi-effects. I put on phaser, delay, and flanger (hey, I just got the thing, of course I'm going to use it all).

The only human intervention, after patching of course, is turning on/off the connection in a dotcom multiple wich receives the 2th and 8th divisions of the basic clock tempo. This cause the bassdrum to drop for half of the beats.

De uitleg: "It's a fairly simple patch. The idea was to put down a drone with a number of slightly detuned, unstable analogue oscillators with on top a random sparkling melody. It turned out a bit different ...

The drone consists of 2 Doepfer A-110 standard VCOs and a livewire AFG tuned approximately to unison. The pulse output of the 3 VCOs go into a mixer. Frequencies and pulse widths of the 3 VCOs are modulated by various LFOs or looping envelopes. The signals are mixed together and send to the main mixer.

The random melody is the Hertz Donut digital oscillator of the Harvestman. The frequency of the oscillator is determined by the random output of the Wiard Noisering. After a while I introduce amp and shape modulation of the primary oscillator by the modulation oscillator.

This together was a bit boring - so for variety I then decided to a split the drone over 3 audio paths: 1 untreated (with which the video begins), 1 through the Harvestman Malgorithm (with Nyquist frequency modulated by a looping envelope), and one through the MakeNoise Quad Multimode Gate (lowpass & VCA mode) open and closed by an envelope from the MakeNoise Maths module (triggered by the clock output from the Noisering). This is then again filtered by another channel of the QMMG (in lowpass mode) with cut-off frequency determined by a slow looping envelope from Maths;

I then decided to have a beat on this, which comes from a drum pattern I programmed on the Korg Elektribe ER-1 -- I'm not much into drum programming so this one is rather boring ...

In the end I found the high random sequence too annoying so I ran part of the sequence through a Doepfer A-163 VC Frequency Divider to generate a sub-octave from it and ran it through the Korg PME-40X Phase, Analogue Delay, and Flanger modules.

The flow of the video is: (1) Basic Drone, (2) Malgorithm treated signal comes in, (3) filtered drone (from the QMMG), (4) drums start, (5) suboctave of the random sequence added, (6) pure Hertz Donut signal added, which is increasingly modulated, (7) everything is gradually mixed away, till we are left (8 ) with some analogue delay feedback from the Korg pedals.

Hmmm, maybe not that simple.

The middle part is a bit chaotic, it is hard to find the right balance between repeating and random with the Noisering and the drums and modular were not synced. And yes, I felt like playing with the video effects in Vegas Movie Studio ..."

Mooi gefilmd hoor. Muzikaal gezien vond ik de 2e het best/ lekkerst/ interessantst. Allebei een leuk einde en das belangrijk.

Ja, ik gebruik de maths als envelope & LFO. moet me nog iets beter verdiepen in de makenoise modules. Ik gebruik de maths nog te veel enkel als AR envelopes of als lfo (looping mode) en de QMMG als VCA of lowpass filter - terwijl er nog veel andere mogelijkheden zijn (phasing met de QMMG, "ringing", XOR gate enzo). Moet me er eens een paart uurtjes met literatuur (manuals van makenoise & buchla) en modules in verdiepen.

Als ik zo'n brom in 't geluid hebt zonder dat 'k een modulaire synth(s) hebt, kan ik 't beste een en ander anders/opnieuw aansluiten, toch?

Laat ik ze hier maar ook even zetten - 3 snippets met mijn nieuw speelgoed de Cloud generator (in augustus vorig jaar besteld, eergisteren aangekregen !) - helaas geen tijd om nieuwe filmpjes te maken:

Semi random sequence met cloud generator (sinus out) en AFG. Basis sequence van de cloud generator komt van sequencer (RS200) maar op random momenten (bepaald door digital random voltages van Doepfer A-149-A) komen er via een sequential switch random noten tussen (van A-149)). De AFG speelt steeds de basis sequence. Ik draai wat aan de spread en chaos knoppen van de cloud generator om te horen wat dat doet.

Dit zou het begin zijn van een echte track - maar mistelt (hmm 9 maten tellen is toch écht te moeilijk voor mij ...). Laat ik hem dan maar verkopen als nog een cloud generator "demo" (+ Poly 61 door Korg PME-40X multiFX).

Zoals elders gevraagd een demo van de Analogue Systems RS-240 (Bode) Frequency Shifter:

De uitleg:

A quick demo of the Analogue Systems RS-240 Frequency Shifter I bought a month ago and just managed to connect in my eurorack modular. Every sound in the video, apart from the delay, is made with Analogue Systems modules -- still hoping for that sponsoring contract ....

The demo starts with a basic patch of 2 RS-95 oscillators (pitch controlled by the AS Sorceror keyboard), through an RS-165 signal mixer in the RS-110 multimode filter. The lowpass output of the filter then goes in the RS-180 VCA. The VCA and the filter cut-off are both controlled by an RS-60 envelope generator, which is triggered by the clock output of the RS-200 sequential controller. In addition to the envelope output, the filter cutoff is also controlled by the triangle output of an RS-80 VC-LFO. For this the envelope and LFO output are combined in a RS-160 control mixer. The first minute of the video gives this untreated sequence. I try pointing out the patch cords and signal path.

After this I plug the output from the VCA in the RS-240 Frequency Shifter. The A (downward shifted signal) and B (upward shifted signal) outputs are send to two channels of my mixer panned hard left and right. The frequency shift is modulated by the output from the RS-200 sequential controller -- so giving a different shift for each step -- and the triangle output from a second RS-80 VC-LFO.

I show the different sounds resulting from varying:
(a) the scale of the RS-240, this switch controls the amount of maximally possible shift from 0 to 5000Hz;
(b) the amount of sweep from the LFO (by varying the output level of the LFO);
(c) the amount of variation from the sequencer (by varying the range of the output of channel A of the sequencer).

After a few minutes I add some delay (courtesy of an Ibanez DM1000 early 80s digital delay) of the mixed output of the RS-240 to give further variation.

This is my first patch with the RS-240 (Bode) Frequency Shifter, but I like the sounds coming from this and there are few demos of this module on the internet so I hope you will enjoy it too.
