Michael is een componist een soundtrackontwerper die woont in Santa Fe, New Mexico (VS). Hij heeft over de gehele wereld gereisd en heeft daar allerlei inheemse muziek opgenomen terwijl hij de kleuren en smaken van de heilige plekken ver weg in zich opnam.
Zijn werk omvat muziek, geluidsontwerpen en soundtrackproducties voor speelfilms, films in groot formaat (zoals IMAX), commercials, documentaires en themaparken. Hij heeft drieëndertig opnamen uitgebracht: twintig solowerken en dertien samenwerkingsverbanden. Ook heeft hij de muziek gemaakt voor films van Disney, PBS, HBO, ABC’s “The World of Explorers”, 20/20, Ripley's “Believe It or Not”, en Ron Fricke’s niet-gesproken wereldfilm meesterwerken “Baraka”, “Chronos” en “Sacred Site”.
Zijn muziek is gebruikt door NASA, Laserium en is op choreografie gezet door het Berkshire Ballet. Heel speciaal zijn de soundtracks die hij heeft geproduceerd voor “Back to the Future, The Ride” en “Star Trek, The Experience”.
Stearns werkt in zijn multi channel surround opname en postproductie faciliteit, de Earth Turtle Studio. Zijn stilistisch diverse en technisch knappe output van muziek bracht een Engelse muziekcriticus om het volgende te schrijven: “Michael Stearns is wellicht de beste en zeker de meest consistent intrigerende Amerikaanse synthesizerspeler die er bestaat".
