Designing a Space Helmet
Lots of considerations go into making a helmet. One of the things you have to take into account is your field of vision.
Mapping your field of vision
You will need:
A clear plastic punch bowl that is big enough for you to stick your face into
Some dot stickers
What to do:
Hold the bowl up to your face, but keep it about 2 inches away from your nose. Maybe have a partner help you.
Keep the bowl the same distance away from your face the whole time, and don't move or turn your head from side to side! Now place the dot stickers at the limit of your vision all around the bowl
Next you can make a Paper Mache Space Helmet using the measurements you just took with the bowl
You will need:
A round balloon
Old newspapers, glue and a brush to make paper mache
Scissors
Paint or pens to decorate your space helmet
What to do:
Inflate the balloon to a diameter greater than your head
Cover the balloon with four layers of paper mache.
(Paper mache can be made with newspaper strips and a 50/50 solution of white glue and water. Let each layer dry, before applying the next one.)
When all four layers are completely dry, deflate and remove the balloon. You should be left with a paper mache shell the same size at the balloon.
Cut a hole on the bottom of the paper mache shell for your head to get through
Cut another hole in the side of the shell that is the same size and shape as the shape you made with the dot stickers in the "Field of Vision" activity.
You can paint and decorate your space helmet.
Try to do everyday activities, like walking around and doing up zippers and buttons while you are wearing it.
Does wearing the helmet effect how you do things?
Do you have to move your head and body differently to interact with people and objects that are all around you?
Would it be hard to get used to wearing a helmet for long periods of time?
Astronauts wear their helmets for up to 8 hours at a time when they are involved in a space walk!
