BOLD is about 45 minutes of modern glitch/beat/sample/lo-fi/ambient tracks, centered around the idea of feeling alive and in spite of everything...hopeful about the future. ("Listening for hope" was born from a similar inspiration, but leaning towards rock a little more) So, BOLD is a purposeful, decided step to "just do it" and try to get something groovy going.
I believe it is not good to "stand still" or just to look back and lose ourselves in retro culture. However much I love the 70s and 80s and retro sound, it feels like we, modern people, are becoming a bit culturally stagnant. It is people like Elon Musk for example that challenge this. Whatever one might object to the man and his technocratic views, (and there's plenty to be said) he ís focusing forward and this is inspiring. I also see it in the works of people like my mate Timo Rozendal and the like, who are pushing the limits of imagination with their modular synthesis and music. It is fascinating to hear and see what they come up with. So, "BOLD" is Looking forward...with imagination.
At the same time, a lot of "new" and "cutting edge", modern art is, well...ugly, imho. I saw that at art school, where the necessity to be "original" led students to do all kinds of crazy stuff in order to try to be that. To do things that "hadn't been done yet". I think that is not the way I want to go, so this album has my typical melodic, harmonic and symphonic elements too.
