De soundtrack van Halloween...

Een van de meeste boeiende soundtracks die ik ken is vind ik toch wel de original
soundtrack van Halloween van regisseur John Carpenter. Temeer omdat de man niet alleen
de film heeft geregisseerd maar ook de muziek zelf heeft geschreven.
Eigenlijk wist ik dat niet eens van John Carpenter..
De muziek vind ik geniaal door zijn eenvoud.. en is ook erg bepalend voor de sfeer in de film.

Bij mij rees de vraag welke instrumenten Carpenter dan wel gebruikt(e) en na een
paar uurtjes googelen kwam ik er toch achter dat het nog niet zo eenvoudig is om
dat te achterhalen. Namen als Moog en Arp ben ik wel tegengekomen maar niet direkt
in relatie gebracht tot bijvoorbeeld deze soundtrack. (Hooguit misschien de Arp Avatar)

As for the rest of the score, it is comprised mainly of synthesizers, the piano playing
a very important part, as does the percussion. The strings more than adequately set up the
tension and the sense of horror throughout the album.
Also worthy of noting is the choice of instrument Carpenter makes whenever something
surprising and horrible is seen on screen. In modern-day slasher movies, most composers
choose high-pitched violins to express shock and to pull their audience six feet above their seats.
In Halloween, the composer instead decided to use sudden low electronic atmosphere sounds,
combined with high metallic synths, and I must say that it works even better. Not only do you
jump every time this happens, but you also feel the disgust and repugnance at the crime that
has been committed (one such moment comes near the end of the second track entitled Halloween
1963, when Michael's parents witness their six-year-old son's very first murder).

I recently picked up a copy of the Halloween III soundtrack on vinyl. Not a very good movie, but
definitely a good soundtrack (and there's a pic on the back of Carpenter with two Avatars!).
