i talked with Dave Bryce (who is now in DSI) couple of times about the
CEMs that Dave Smith used inside Evolver engine. It turns out that
Evo uses two newly designed CEMs that Dave Smith persuaded
Curtis to make especially for him;
One is some kind of CEM DCO, different from 3340 circuit, the other
one is CEM Lowpass filter, imo very similar in sound to something
between 2nd gen filter sound of the 3372 voice processor (found in
Xpander, M12, T8 and P600) and the 3rd gen. 'thinner' 3387 (found in
late CEM-based machines like Wave, mWave, Prophet3000 etc).
Highpass is, of course digital, followed by feedback and distortion
circuits (all digital). therefore its ahitecture has an additional A/D/A
phase before finally hitting the outputs. this was, before i heard some
killer demos lately by Stefan, my grpie with this concept.
i guess, hybrid or no hybrid - if it sounds good, nothing else matters.
