Max for Live & MaxMSP Community meeting

Dear Max & Max for Live User,

Our new meeting will be held on the 31 of May @ STEIM starting at 19:00.
There will be some minor changes in the meetings. From now on we will announce the topics we will discuss in the next meeting. We also aim to have some small presentation at every meeting.
For our next meeting Jessica Aslan will present a project she has been working that deals with the new Kinect from Microsoft.

This is a small description of her work:

What I'm working on is to look at economical ways that digital musical interfaces can be used to facilitate music making among people with a physical or learning disability. Sounds quite vague; I'm actually looking into different types of technique that can be identified for use with particular users. At the moment I'm working on the Kinect, *trying* to programme in gesture recognition through FTM objects-unfortunately the data is currently jittery though I think I just need to reinstall the drivers. It will be a beta type presentation, but will a good way to show how you can get and use accurate skeleton data from the kinect to Max, how simple motions can be very musically effective and conversely trying to programme more accuracy than just region clouds or acceleration recognition. It would also be nice to listen to other's ideas on how they might use it. The group that I imagine would use the Kinect in this way are performers in large groups that have movement but there are not the resources for one to one instrumental training on a traditional instrument.

Moving on from this I hope to look at hand/finger movement recognition, which has more obvious merits in terms of facilitation. Aside from the kinect, I am designing workshops that use 8 MIDI pads and a MIDI interface for example, and how ownership can be given to a composition realised with simple triggers.

Also we will discuss how to integrate Max patches in Max for Live Devices since there are some questions from the group about this subject.

Hope to see you next week. Please let us know if you are attending the meeting!!! :okdan:
