Hij heeft gewoon de soundengine van de Ion (dus helemaal patch-compatible), evenveel stemmen. Als extra (itt de Ion) heeft ie ook nog een effect chip aan boord voor galmpjes e.d. En hij zit in een kleinere kast met minder knopjes, dus zal wel een stuk goedkoper zijn...

Ik vind dit een beetje jammer, want hoe kun je nou een synth als de ion in een heel klein bakje stoppen met 3 knoppen. Zou dit een manier zijn om het gevecht met de softsynthmarkt aan te gaan ?

Je zou er natuurlijk een externe controller aan kunnen hangen om de geluiden te bewerken. Hoogst waarschijnlijk komt hier ook wel een software versie van

Ach, die microKorg is een leuke hit geweest. Alesis probeert het ook gewoon en waarom ook niet. Veel mensen werken tegenwoordig met groovedoosjes en software en dan past deze er leuk tussen. Overigens denk ik dat een module met iets meer knoppen ook wel interessant is voor veel studio's...

Persoonlijk vindt ik zo'n klein keyboard erbij erg ideaal. Het geeft me ook veel inspiratie om nieuwe dingen te doen. Maar vaak missen ze wel iets.
Waldorf microQ kb...... iets te duur.
novation K-station...... voor hetzelfde geld koop je een rack dat multitimbraal is.
microkorg.... te weinig prijsverschil met de ms2000 rack.

Ik ben bang dat de Ion toch wel wat knoppen mist en ook te duur gaat worden. Maar als de prijs goed is, kan dit best wel interessant zijn. De soundengine heeft immers veel positieve reacties gehad.

De Korg prophecy is eigenlijk ook een beetje hetzelfde concept en daar kan je leuke dingen mee doen, ook al haal je er niet hetzelfde uit als met je met een normale VA zou doen, omdat je wat hands-on controle mist.

In de studio is ie misschien minder handig dan een rack, maar live lijkt met dit wel een tegek ding. Fender Rhodes, rompler-keyboard, en dit dingetje erbij voor de analoge shit. Tis dat ik al een Ion heb....!

The Alesis booth is set up a bit differently than previous shows. We
have 1 table on the end of the booth that is dedicated to "new
products". This table happens to be on the opposite end of the booth
that the synths are on. If you only look at the Synth area, you will
miss the Micron.

At any rate, it's not that exciting at this point, since the Micron
is only a prototype with lights and display.

To answer a few questions that others have inquired about:

1) The Micron uses full-size keys. We agree that the MicroKorg is
hard to play.

2) The Micron will have a phrase sequencer, and the ability to have
at least 4, and up to 8 parts. This new firmware is one of the
reasons that the Micron won't ship for a few more months, but will
add value to the product. Eventually, we plan to integrate the
features back into the Ion.

3) We had to make some internal design improvements in order to save
cost and get the product to have a $499 price. This means that we
need to spend some time to change the firmware to support the new
internal hardware. Keep in mind that the voicing engine is the same.

4) The Micron has a dedicated Reverb chip, and the Ion doesn't. This
is simply to address the request from end-users like yourselves. The
Ion will not be able to support the new Reverb programs.

5) The Micron and Ion will ultimately be patch-compatible, except for
hardware limitations (reverb) that otherwise prevent it. Ion
firmware will need to be updated to support this.

6) The Micron is primarily designed to address the user base that
wants the sounds, but does not want the editing capability. The
Micron will be editable, but only via the computer. The unit itself
will only have very limiting editing capabilitites.

erm... wat word er nu precies onder een 'tracking generator' verstaan dan...? gewoon kybd-tracking?

Geen keyboard tracking, alhoewel ik aan de hand van keyboardtracking (KT) kan uitleggen wat een Tracking Generator (TG) is:

KT een controller voor je noten. Een TG is geen controller maar beïnvloedt controllers d.m.v. (16 of 18 - hangt af van type en merk synth) parameters. Hij heeft een controller-ingang en een uitgang. Wat moet je ermee?
Voorbeeld: in het 4e octaaf is de resonantie niet hard genoeg aanwezig. Je patcht de KT naar de input van TG en de output van TG naar resonance. D.m.v. de parameters van de TG heb je een volledig instelbare (dus niet per sé lineair!) keyboardtracking naar resonance.

Het hangt af van je perverse synth-brein wat je ermee kunt doen. Ik heb bijvoorbeeld op de Andromeda d.m.v. onder andere de TG een Program gemaakt die kickdrum, snare en bassline speelt. Zonder multitimbraal te zijn, met slechts één monofone voice! Het geluid heet Organic Battery (geloof ik - het is al weer 3,5 jaar geleden dat ik aan de Andromeda werkte). Check 'm uit bij je dealer.

De TG is een duivels stukje synth-techniek!

Alesis Micron

The ION brought us a high-powered analog modeling synth with 500mips of processing power and plenty of knobbage for tweaking in real-time. Now Alesis have squeezed all that power into a compact package (must have been a lot of air in the ION!). The Micron boasts the same sound engine as the Ion in a compact 3-octave keyboard offering breakthrough analog realism, high-resolution control, and tremendous value. The Micron is compatible with Ion programs, holding over 1,000 programs and multitimbral setups.
The Micron offers continuously variable wave shapes, plus sync and FM synthesis. 16 filter types are included, along with 2 LFOs with multiple wave shapes and sample & hold. The Micron has 8-voice polyphony with 3 oscillators per voice, and is 4-part multitimbral. The Micron offers a programmable step sequencer, arpeggiator, rhythm sequencer for drum kits, and dynamic realtime phrase sequencer—all of which sync to MIDI clock. A powerful and intuitive modulation matrix is built in. Effects include a 40 band vocoder that does not use up any polyphony, 4 drive effects, and stereo bus effects, including reverb powered from an additional dedicate reverb DSP chip.

For assignable realtime control, the Micron offers 3 knobs, 2 modulation sliders, and a pitch wheel. The knobs are 360 degree potentiometers with 12-bit resolution, yielding 32 times the resolution of a typical MIDI controller, yet still compatible with the latest sequencers via NRPMS (Non-Registered Parameter Numbers). The result is extraordinary precision—void of any undesirable digital artifacts—and a very “analog” sound throughout the entire frequency range.

The Micron keyboard has 37 keys with velocity and release velocity sensitivity. There are 2 analog outputs and 2 stereo analog inputs—all ¼” balanced and using 24-bit conversion. Also included are connections for expression pedal, sustain pedal, and MIDI In, Out, and Thru.

Developed by the same sound design team that programmed the flagship Andromeda synthesizer, the Micron’s presets cover a variety of genres, including many exciting new tonalities, as well as classic synth emulations. Ion programs can be transferred to and from the Micron via MIDI, and more new sounds will also be available from the Alesis website.

Sadly, as the model we saw was not a final production model, we have no sounds to offer but it is due to ship in May 2004 – so keep an eye out for our 2004 MESSE coverage.

The Micron will retail for around $699
