I would like to tell you about the issues we are experiencing using a MOTU 828mkII USB on a pc installed with WIN XP. (please find complete host-system details below)
The issue we are having is as following:
- The latency / buffer-size that can be configured from the MOTU control-panel can only be set to values starting from 256 samples or higher. It is our expectation that this unit should be able to perform
also with lower buffer-sizes like 128 and 64 samples. It is not possible to initialize the interface with these settings since they simply cannot be chosen from within the MOTU control-panel. This was tested and replicated
on a total of 4 different PC's all with different hardware-specifications. We have tested the same using a Macintosh system and there the buffer-sizes of 128 and even 64 were available to choose resulting in the expected low latency behaviour.
Although, when using within a pc-based configuration, the buffersize 256 is available to choose from the list it will fail when trying to initialize the ASIO driver using that setting.
Behaviour we have seen when trying this differs from time to time, but never succeeds:
- an error message telling the user that the system was unable to initialize with buffersize 256 and the configuration is automatically set back to 512 samples
- completely automatic restart of the pc after first seeing a blue-screen with error-messages pointing to the failure of the device driver
- completely automatic restart of the pc without seeing any error message or bluescreen. After restarting the pc, windows XP then informs the user that the system 'crashed' due to a device driver exception.
This was tested using the drivers provided on the MOTU-cd as well as with the latest drivers available from the MOTU website.
The questions we are having:
1. What is the reason why the buffer-sizes '64' and '128' are not available to choose within the MOTU control panel when using within a pc-based configuration, while this is possible using on a Mac.
From our opinion it seems that the hardware supports these settings, but the provided Windows XP driver doesn't.
2. What can be the reason why trying to initialize the ASIO driver with 256 samples is resulting in the above described behaviour.
Notes:
- please remember that with all tests done above we couldn't find any issue pointing at using a too slow system that doesn't meet the minimal system requirements.
- when using any of the other available buffer-size options from 512 and higher the system is function properly.
System used:
Dell Precision M65
Intel T7200 2GHz dual core
2GB RAM
7200 rpm harddrives.
Things we've tried:
* - Re-installing driver.
* - Installed on 3 other Pc's with complete different specifications resulting in the same behaviour
* - Fully re-installed pc with Win-XP and tested again with same behaviour.
