[Radikal] Spectralis

more dirty, more!

:koffie:

Is that only the spectralis?

No, it was only the drum section of the spectralis - filtered by the hybrid synth analog filters and digital filterbank;-) At this example you still can do some nasty things with the polyphonic sample based synth engine and the oscillators of the hybrid synth.

And to Joerg. The Machinedrum UserWave could come a long way with sampling. But do you really want to compare these machines? The non UW version of the MD costs 1200 Euro's! A full 800 euro's less than the lowest price i can find on the Spectralis. The UserWave version which has some tricks up it's sleeve i think the Spectralis isn't (YET?) able to perform costs 1600 euro's, so still 400 cheaper than the Spectralis. Also consider that the Machinedrum has a highly mature Operating System. This is a big selling point as far as i am concerned.
And think of this: What would a 2000 Euro machinedrum gain featurewise? Analog filters, Analog Oscillators? Who knows, and who cares?

Besides this do we really want to compare a percussion synth/sampler with a "Hybrid Synthesizer" (with analog oscillators and filters) as you call it on your website? I think these are two different machines and not very comparable except maybe the drumsampler part.

Don't get me wrong, i love the machine you developed. Very impressive indeed.....but why compare it to the machinedrum in the first place? Posting a mp3 demo with the comment "can the machinedrum do this?" is very dangerous in my humble opinion. What if someone posts an mp3 with something your machine can't do either (and i believe this is very possible)? Who's would be the winner of your little contest.

Bottom line is....respect Elektron en respect yourself.....i love both companies ideas and this might convince me to shell out the money for a Spectralis in the near future. Just don't make it a contest!

Elektron is a very nice company with good support and their products don't deserver the hammering they are receiving lately. There's a machine out there for everyone and not every machine will have the same featureset or pricing.

And why should they?

Ok ......I understand that it can do a whole lot more, compared to a MD.

But that was not my question.

I asked, if it sounded a bit sameish as the MD

Well the only real different thing i hear in the last demo is that i hear an analog or Virtual analog synthmodel sequenced in a demo song. What's so special?

MD + DSI Evolver does the same and much much more for less euro's.

(This is an example of how such comparisson could end up)

Oh it's your right to ask.....no problems there......

It sounds like sampled digital drums (or at least drums created with drum synthesis). If that's not your thing, use different samples. Has little to do with the machine itself i think.

I can certainly understand why you consider the sound to be Machinedrum-ish. The first two mp3's are certainly recreatable on the standard machinedrum. The last one, with the analog synth in it, would be a little problem since the MD doesn't have analog oscillators to begin with.

I didn't actually hear the first two demo's untill this post. While they sound good to me they would indeed sound like something a machinedrum would do. Exactly why i bought the thing aswell! :)

I think a good set of 909/808 drumsamples that just sounds like the real deal would make a bigger impact.

I asked, becaus the spectralis looks like a brilliant concept, that really interest me, but to me the character of the demo sounds, sound a whole lot like the MD......and I don't like the sound of the MD

You answer has to be 'yes', because ist ònly the spekkie and no other gear :D

Ik vindt het nu al een briljante bak, en dan komen er straks nog meer extra functie bij :{

Spectralis is the no-compromises combination of an extremely powerful subtractive Synthesizer, a pattern based Sequencer maximized for Live Performance and a sampling DSP engine.

http://www.spectralis.de/english/Audio-Samples/Filterbank-Demos/filterbank-demos.html

Sorry - it began in the way, that the forum started to compare the spectralis with the machinedrum. I love the electron stuff as well - but I also don't think, that it makes sense to compare those machines. That was the main reason for posting something completly different. The machinedrum, the evolver, the monomachine, the voyager, the Macbeth stuff and many more products from small enthusiastic and innovative companies have all their own philosophy, their own market place and I never would start an electron bashing. I met the electron designers at the second last NAMM show at the Radikal booth and I know, that these guys are nice. I wish, that all these little companies can do a succesfull business. I am sorry in case that I offend someone here. That was not my intention.

Naaaah, i don't think you have offended anyone Joerg :). You certainly didn't offend me and i hope you don't feel offended aswell! We talk a lot worse to eachother here on this forum. haha.

These demo's are hard for me though. Specially the ones on the website (didn't particulary care for the ones you posted here). The noise demo's through the filters (which Johnny pointed me at) sound so sweet!

I understand you didn't intend to bash elektron. We can compare them soundwise....but not featurewise. And that was my main concern. Of course a machine with internal analog oscillators can do more than a drumsynth.

Also other way around. it's not healthy for your company to start comparing MP3's with sounds. Some people like one sound, other peopel the other (the great danger with Mp3 demo's in general in my opinion!).

I was discussing the Spectralis with Johhny and i wondered if there is something like drumkits in there. (Something that somehow limits synthesis parameters to a range usefull for drums and maybe enables the quick mapping of different sounds over different midi channels).

If so that would really make the Spectralis and all round sounddesign tool. (Dr00l)

Ok - I thought, my first demo already showed a little bit, that there are drum-kits in there. The spectralis has onboard Sample RAM with 128 MB - 8 of these MB are used for FX's but the remaining 120 MB are for samples. There are already a lot of drumsamples inside the machine, when you purchase one. Additionally to the Sample RAM the spectralis comes with 64 MB internal Flash memory with a lot of ready to use drum and percussion sounds. Soemone asked for 808 and 909 samples - they are already there in a good quality. During startup the spectralis copies all these samples into the RAM memory. This is necessary for realizing the high polyphony of the DSP synth engine. The serial flash memory would not be fast enough for polyphonic synth pads. But this will be finished in about ten two twenty seconds inc. booting and after startup, around 50 MB will already be loaded into the machine.
But the flash memory is fully user configurable. You can remove all samplesets from the Flash ROM and you can drag and drop your own samplesets onto the memory. For doing so you can simply plug the spectralis USB cable into your computer. The spectralis will pop up memory mediums on your computer like a digital camera or a memory stick. Your prepared sample sets can then be dragged and dropped directly onto the flash memory.
The spectralis has different parts. 11 of these parts are reserved for drum samples. This parts have a drum grid editor that allows to edit even 192th notes, can handle track length of up to 16 bars a different measure formats. These settings can be done individually for each of the eleven drum parts.
Each of this drumparts also comes with independent digital Multimode filters with resonance up to self resonance and Filter and Amplifier envelopes.
After creating your pattern you can save it together with all additional parameters and recall it any time with other words -the pattern not only memorize the drumgroove but also all synth parameters.
We will add further synth parameters to the drum parts soon but so far, this is what you get.
The patterns store many other things as well. You can feed the drumgroove or only selected parts of this drumgroove into the anlog filtering section of the spectralis. Also these routings will be stored into the pattern. Then you can use the step sequencer of the hybrid synth to make some filter modulations on the drum parts you have selected.
Then you can select one of these DSP-Synth parts to play and record some polyphonic tracks and you can add the monophonic hybrid synth. Again - all these things - the whole routing, output assignemnt, input assignment, FX-settings can be saved for each pattern indiviadiually. That allows to switch to something completly different drm one pattern to another. Each song of the spectralis holds up to 32 patterns a the moment and we will increase the number of possible songs to 32 soon. The spectralis comes with a lot of memory, to hold all this data. And when the memory is full, you have still two smart media slots for sample import which work in the same way like the internal flash rom.
Maybe, my report was somewhat helpful to understand, what the spectralis does. ;-)

Can't help myself saying that's pretty impressive. But i was aiming more at the oscillator models.

I trust these are well able to design drumsounds with. But is there a possibility to save these in some kind of kit? Zo you can actually build synthssounds of synthesized drums?

EDIT: I think you just gave me the answer yourself in the Sonicstate Winter NAMM 2004 video. 8o)
