The Yamaha CS-70M, (M stood for memory) was supposed to be the replacement for the legendary CS-80, it didn't work out that way.
The CS-70M is a 6 note polyphonic synth with 61 non-weighted, non-velocity, and non-factory MIDI. My CS-70M has been retrofitted with the Kenton MIDI, and works great, but has limited implementation. The factory presets are extremely lame and like most analogs of the era, once you move a few sliders, you quickly come up with far more useable patches. Like the revision 2 prophet-5, you have to put the CS-70M into an edit mode before the controls take effect. The sliders are digitized/ quantized into discernible steps. Performing a filter cutoff frequency sweep with the slider sounds rough and stepped instead of smooth. This is probably one of the reasons why the CS-70M is less popular than the CS-60 & CS-80. The manual is quite good and the Kenton MIDI doesn't support sysex. Any software upgrades would be done by changing chipsets, if ever available.

Features: 8
6 note polyphony, two patches per note. Same keyboard as the SK series, very light and plasticky. The CS-70M has mono aftertouch which is limited to appying LFO to VCO, VCF, or VCA (any or all). The 70 has pitch and mod wheels similar to the Minimoog (the 70 pitch wheel spring returns to center). Kenton has stopped manufacturing MIDI retrofits for most old synths, due to decreased sales. The 70 has two effects; ensemble and tremolo. Tremolo is a rotary speaker effect with a speed switch and convincing acceleration/ deceleration to simulate a Leslie speaker (strange to find on a synth) The Ensemble effect is a heavy chorus/ phaser that gives every sound a crappy 1970s string machine vibe (very RS-09 organ/strings-like) Not neccesarily a bad thing. The 70 has a polyphonic sequencer which is very limited; 128 steps, 4 banks, volitile memory, no midi sync. The only way to save sequences and programs is by magnetic card reader located on the front right of the keyboard. This is the same reader and cards found on the GS-1/ GS-2 synths ( magnetic litmus strip kind of thing, impossible to find.)

Expressiveness/Sounds: 10
If I could rate the sound a (20) I would. It's all CS. The 70 has the same oscillators and filters as the CS-80 ( yes! I checked the schematics.) I've owned CS-60s and 50s over the years and was skeptical about the CS-70M before buying it. If you want the power of the legendary CS series at a fraction of the cost, the 70 is a great choice. It even has the high pass, band pass, ring modulator, and sine wave added in the VCA section. It lacks the touch-response which is a characteristic of the CS-80. the added features of a second LFO and sample and hold waveform, additional modulation routings doesn't make up for it.

Reliability: 6
Like any old synth. This one was broken when I bought it, it's fixed now. I don't know how long it'll stay that way. Don't gig with these old war-horses, just sample them and enjoy them next to your lava lamps.

Yamaha's been great with newer gear, they'll laugh at you if you ask about this one.

Overall Rating: 8
I'll still end up buying a CS-80. I missed being able to buy the 70 when they first hit the market in the early eighties. I'd have never made enough playing clubs to pay the $7000 this cost when new. I do remember drooling over it in the music store. ( good story grandpa!)

moest even.. :)

Calafornia here whe come
