Ik gebruik nu nog een drumstation als vervanging voor de 808, maar ben 'm een beetje beu... tis 'm gewoon niet.

Nog steeds niets binnen, wel een aanbetaling gedaan.
Dus zal het niet lang meer duren.... hoop ik...
Wat kan wachten toch lang duren.

Ik hoop stiekem 'm met koninginnedag te kunnen gebruiken, maar ben bang dat dit niet gaat lukken.

Hoe is de sound eigenlijk? in verhouding tot de echte 808?

Er zijn verschillende 808's en zo goed als de meeste wijken ook weer van elkaar af.......ik denk dat "de 808" klank niet bestaat en voor een ieder iets anders inhoud, wel nog verder gaan dat een 808 kwa klank niet is wat "iedereen" denkt, maar dat dit meestal een geproceste (hoe schrijf je dit eigenlijk taal nazi's?) sound is...
Dan valt een cleane 808 sound tegen.

zo had ik er een tijdje terug twee, welke totaal verschillend klonken. de ene rock en ruis, de andere dun en bijna steriel. mijn oude gehouden en die laatste weer verkocht.

Ik verwacht dat de vergelijking met het verschil tussen de tb303 en de x0xb0x wel op zijn plaats is.

In real-live heb ik de mb808 nog niet gehoord, maar verwacht toch wel dat ie de tr808 goed gaat evenaren.

Er zijn verschillende 808's en zo goed als de meeste wijken ook weer van elkaar af.

Als ze exact hetzelfde zijn afgeregeld (wat af fabriek wel zo zal zijn, maar door de jaren heen verloopt het, bij de een meer dan de ander) houdt dat in technisch opzicht in dat het een inferieur ontwerp is.
En juist deze imperfecties maken dat onze vintageapparatuur zo lekker organisch en warm klinkt.

Imperfecties, of onderdelen die opgaand zijn, of verschillende types, of solderen en SMD solderen, alles is klinkt en ziet er anders uit....om nog maar te zwijgen over externe invloeden op je ervaring met wat je hoort

• The fourth batch will be the last. I will only order as many circuit boards as I need to supply kits to those on the waiting list. There will be no more after that.
• The board design files are not for sale and will not be published.

Quick Details

• The parts kit from me costs $200 US.
• You will also need about $150 of parts from a place like Mouser.
• You will need a mains transformer. The one I use is about $30 at Digikey.

That will get you to the stage where you have a completed PCB with the MIDIbox sequencer and all the 808 voices. For a complete 808 clone, you will also want:

• Some kind of case and/or front panel. Hammond cases are a good option. I have also briefly communicated with The Beast about making panels.
• You will need knobs for the potentiometers.
• You may also want an LCD to make it easier to program. The one I use is by Crystalfontz.

Er komt dus nog een 'fourth batch' aan.


Na ~2,5 jaar wachten zal het dan bijna zo ver zijn....

Ik weet het niet jongens. Na meer dan twee jaar nadat de mensen hebben betaald zal hij de kits "bijna" kunnen versturen.

Ik vertrouw het zaakje toch niet, heb op een paar andere fora gekeken en een aantal mensen dreigen al met juridische stappen omdat ze hun geld niet terugkrijgen!!

Als er iemand effectief een kit heeft gekregen van Doug, laat maar weten.

• Lots of things have happened recently, but not much to tell you about the 808 kits. I ordered the final PCBs! This batch cost more than the previous batch was supposed to, so I saved a little money with slow shipping. They should get here any day.
• Sunday I leave on a business trip. I'll be out of town for at least a week. Unfortunately, the customer I'm going to work for has been having Internet connection problems, so I won't be able to check email during the day, and possibly not at all until I get back. Please don't panic.
• OK, looks like I almost have my email sorted out. I only have a couple messages left to reply to. It looks like one request for parts, several requests to be added to the waiting list, and a status request or two. I'll get to you as soon as I can.

November 7, 2012:

• I'm back. How many of you had a panic attack while I was gone? I hope none!
• I've got lots of email to go through. Please give me a few days and I'll get to you.
• I'll put a better update here in a couple days when I get everything sorted.
• Soon, I'll be sending out emails to people who have already sent deposits. Please set aside about $100 for the final payment. Don't worry, I've made you wait this long, so I'll be happy to wait for you if you need a bit of time to come up with the rest.
• I've had another flood of emails requesting to get in on the fourth batch. I'm close enough to finishing now that I'm going to set the deadline for the last batch at December 31, 2012. At that time, I'll send out a notice to everyone on the list to confirm. That will be the last batch.

Wowsers, didn't realize it had been so long since I posted here...

My priority has been to put updates on the web page, not to post to any particular forum, partly because I don't know where everybody hangs out, and partly because I'm trying to stay focused and keep it simple so that everybody has only one place to look. Final deadline:
I'm committing to finishing up everything by the end of the year. That means that I am going to close the list for the last batch on December 31, 2012.

Current batch:
At the moment, I'm trying to catch up on emails, then I will double check all my parts to make sure I have everything (Note: I think I already have everything, but I want to make sure), and after that I'll start sending out messages to everybody on the order list to finalize details like shipping address and cost. I plan to be completely done with batch three before I start dealing with batch four.

Last batch. (Batch four.)
On January 1, 2013, I will send out an email to everybody on the waiting list for batch four, the last batch, then give everybody until January 14 to reply to me to confirm that they are still interested. I plan to only make enough circuit boards to cover everybody who is on the list by January 1 and who replies to me by January 14. On January 15, I will place the order for circuit boards. As soon as the boards arrive, I will send out invoices, and you'll have two weeks from that day to confirm and pay. After the two weeks, all outstanding invoices will be cancelled and any remaining boards will be available on a first-come-first-served basis. When they are gone, I plan to have a private ceremony at my house where I will delete all the Gerbers and Eagle files associated with this project.

Hopefully that means everything will be completely wrapped up and done by the end of February, 2013. Good luck to all of us.

Eindelijk weer wat info op de mb808-site met o.a. een lijstje aanpassingen t.o.v. rev 2:

Release 3

NOTE: Several changes made to layout. This version will *NOT* fit behind the same front panel as revisions 1 and 2. Also, the optional potentiometers and switches have been removed and power supply has been changed.

• Changed solder mask to black to distinguish from revision 1 and 2.
• Added "Revision 3" label.
• Redid sequencer section - all buttons are now in two rows. Removed one unneeded shift register.
• Added 2x16 LCD next to step buttons.
• Redid main output section to move volume knob.
• Redid accent section to align accent knob and LED.
• Moved record LED near live button.
• Updated labels - no more "U$". All TR-808 transistors are labeled with a "Q" prefix, and all MIDIbox transistors are labeled with "T". In addition, all Q labels now match original TR-808 schematics.
• Made labels more descriptive on headers, buttons, shift registers, crystal, eeproms, etc.
• Reduced layer changes and removed over 200 vias.
• Moved all instrument output connections to pin 1 of header and moved headers to all face the same direction, next to RT switches.
• Connected second EEPROM id pins in schematic and routed traces.
• Changed button names to match MB-808 sequencer functions (see uCapps.de 808 page).
• Moved all instrument trigger connections to pin 1 of header and all accent connections to pin 2.
• Corrected hihat knob alignment to 1.3" to right of cymbal (same spacing as other voices).
• Finished lining up potentiometers and switches.
• Lined up trigger LEDs on center lines of voice knobs. Where there are two LEDs per column, each LED is .4" left or right of the centerline.
• Moved many parts labels to make them more readable.
• Increased trace sizes - minimum trace is now 24 mil instead of 16.
• Changed DIN resistor networks from five pins to six.
• Added missing R226 resistor to Low Tom.
• Removed SV2 and SV3 headers.
• Added DIN sync and start/stop outputs.
• Added headers at end of DIN and DOUT chains.
• Removed instrument select.

  • BD-Tune potentiometer - 50kb
