It’s not very well known, and certainly not as fact, that the Soviet Union did not destroy itself by themselves per se.

After the occupation of Afghanistan in 1979 it became clear for the secret services in the west that communism was doomed in that particular area of the world. Certainly when knowing in hindsight that the occupation was a total disaster. Odd perhaps, when you take into account their resources, but then again, I guess, systems come and systems go. And it will happen to us as well, I assure you. So is the flow of society. Maybe we’ll get thrown back, maybe we e- or revolve.

Anyway, the destruction of the USSR was always a higher goal for our government; it needed just that particular chance, an extra push so to say. That chance and push just happened to appear on a rainy day in Berlin in November 1984.

I was standing at Kurfürstendamm. Waiting in the rain. I still got a smoking habit then and I just lit my second cigarette within five minutes. Let me tell you, I’m not the type of man that you’ll notice in public. Hell, as a child it has happened frequently that even my parents had forgotten me when we’d gone on a vacation. It’s not something I like to talk about, but it comes in handy in my kind of job.

I was standing there since four pm and the evening rush has just been starting. Many people minding their own business, a highschoolclass passing by, probably from Holland judging by their language.

I was waiting for a man. Let’s call him ‘Alex’. Alex was one of those people that had contacts in whole Berlin. Not only West, but most of all East Berlin. If you’d see him, then you wouldn’t believe me. He worked as a janitor at the Hansa Studios and I suspected him of having a direct phone line from there, straight through the wall at the other side of the street, into East Berlin. He could even give me the subject of Honecker’s next speech. But, only for the right amount of money. I give you my honest word, I’ve verified these things.
