About the MonoPoly -
For starters... THIS SYNTH IS INCREDIBLE!!!
The MonoPoly was manufactured by Korg between 1981 and 1984 and only about 10,000 were made! They are quite vintage and rare! I advise any true analog enthusiast to get one of these! They are amazing! I wouldn't sell this one if I didn't have to but now I can let someone else have some great fun! Highly underrated and well worth their weight in gold!
It consists of 4 seperate voices (VCO's - voltage controlled oscillators) which can be used individually or played in Unison. It's like having four monosynths in one!
Each Osc has its own waveform (Triangle, Saw, Pulse Width (PW), and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)), tune (Osc 1 has Master Tune allowing the other three to be tuned with or against it), octave selection (16', 8', 4', 2'), and individual Volume Level controls.
The Pulse Width Modulation section consists of a selector switch to choose the PWM source as VCF EG, MG1, or MG2 and also has an Intensity control. The PW section has a single control for varying the Width.
There is also an independent White Noise Generator with its own Volume Level control.
There is a section on the MonoPoly labelled Key Assign Mode that has selectable switches for POLY (1 switch for Poly and another one for Unison/Share), MONO (1 switch for Unison and another for chord memory (for remembering multiple notes at once for a fuller sound) as well as a switch to hold the note just played (HOLD). This way when the HOLD is selected the solid sound continuously plays for hands free control.
There is a built in Arpeggiator that goes Up, Down, and Both with variable speed control (MG2) and the ability to turn it On, Off, or Latch which continuously plays the Arpeggiator without needed to hold keys to make interesting sounds that play by themselves. You can also choose between 1 OCT, 2 OCT, and FULL.
A unique feature of this analog (analogue) synthesizer is the voice chip used. The only synth that I know of that uses the SSM2033 chip (4 of them) and the more common filter chip the SSM2044.
The VCF (Voltage Control Filter) is a self oscillating 4-pole 24dB per octave low pass filter (LPF) with controls for Frequency Cutoff, Resonance, Envelope Generator (EG) Intensity (-5 to +5), Keyboard Tracking control.
The VCF EG (filter envelope) is an ADSR Envelope that consists of controls for the amounts of Attack, Decay, Sustain, and release.
The Amplifier section (VCA - Voltage Controlled Amplifier) is also an ADSR Envelope with controls for Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release.
The MG (Modulation Generator) section is pretty incredible. There are two LFO's (Low Frequency Oscillators). MG1 consists of selectable waveforms (Triangle, Up Saw, Down Saw, and Square) as well as Frequency control. MG2 only has Frequency Control.
The wheel section is quite nice. You can select each wheel for either VCO1/Slave VCO, Pitch, or VCF and both wheels have Intensity controls. The first Wheel is labelled Bend and the other is MG1.
One very nice feature of this synthesizer is the effects section. A single orange button can be pressed to activate the effects. Within the effects section is a three position switch that can select the Mode be it Sync (oscillator sync), S & X (sync and cross modulation), and X-MOD (cross modulation). You can also select the mode to be Single (i.e using osc sync... osc2, 3, and 4 are sync'd to osc1) or Double (osc 2 is sync'd to osc 1 and osc 4 is sync'd to osc 3). There is also a FREQ MOD section where you can select VCF EG or MG1 with Intensity control. There is also a control for the amount of X-MOD.
A few other sections consist of TRANSPOSE (Up, DOwn, Normal), Trigger (Single and Multiple), AUTO DAMP (On and Off), PORTAMENTO (Glide) with Time control, DETUNE, and an Output section with Volume control and a selector switch for High, Low, and Off.
This synth has 44 keys, 41 knobs, 14 switches, 6 buttons, and two assignable wheels, and 10 different inputs and outputs.
ON the rear of the uniit you will find an Arpeggio Trig In 1/4" jack, Porta jack(1/4"), VCF fcM IN 1/4" jack, VCO FM IN 1/4" jack, TRIG IN and OUT 1/4" jacks with +15 or GND switch, CV IN and OUT (OCT/v) 1/4" jacks, and also Phones and Output 1/4" jacks.
The weight of the MonoPoly withoutthe case is approximately 12kg (approx. 27 pounds).
