Re: M-Audio Firewire 410
Even weer on topic. Hier een citaat van iemand die de 410 gebruikt met Logic onder OSX. Van Logic Yahoo-forum geplukt.
"Less than 1 minute after installing my new M-Audio Firewire 410 on a PB 867 (OSX 10.2.6, driver version 1.01 - also made a test with OSX 10.2.8 ) I was able to measure its minimal latency, by simply launching FM7 OSX and playing with the audio buffer settings. At this state of development, latency is absolutely catastrophic : 8 ms at 48 khz. You just can't play a guitar with effects (or worse, sing with a mike) with such a crappy driver. Even the Emi 2/6 performs better through USB (6 ms at 48 khz in the same app). And of course the Powerbook's internal audio beats them all : 2 ms at 44,1 khz, even less at 48 khz when the app allows it (like Logic or Reason). I made a test with logic 6.21 with minimal buffer settings (64 samples) and the feeling was as bad as with FM7. So I decided to switch back to internal audio, the Firewire 410 being just used as a mic/guitar preamp...
This is not what I expected from Firewire. I thought I would have something like 2 ms - just like with Motu interfaces - and that the price difference was justified by other parameters like the number of ins and outs.
So if you need really short latency, don't do like me : don't buy this product before you are sure M-Audio have released a serious driver. Seeing the performances of their other audio products, I think there is hope for much better latency. But really, they should have given the real figures before launching the Firewire 410. If I can do the test in a few seconds, they can. There are plenty of OSX apps that measure an audio hardware's latency in ms (Reason demo, for example).
BTW, if you intended to buy it for use under OS9 (as an ideal Amplitube input device, for example, as many thought it would be) then forget it.
Performances are not better under OS9, and I have heard about some other problems."
Voor Windows ziet het er beter uit. (LAW = Logic Audio Windows, LAM = Logic Audio Mac) Citaat:
"OK, now it's very clear : M-Audio Firewire 410 is not for Mac users. After the Powerbook 867, I have just tested it on a pretty modest PC configuration (P4 1,7 with 133 mhz motherboard, RAM 256 MB, Sound Blaster Audigy for the Firewire interface) and the performances are WAY BETTER than on the Mac. At the very same settings (128 samples, 48 khz), the difference between LAW 5.5.1 and LAM 6.2.1 is enormous. Had no time to measure the exact latency (would estimate it to something like 4 ms) but you can monitor a guitar with effects without frustration. Of course LAW's ASIO
implementation has never been very good, so I guess other PC audio apps can even perform better with the Firewire 410.
This confirms that there is hope for big improvements on the Mac side. But once again, LAM users : don't buy this product before it has better drivers."
