mr. Banks

Tony de gitaar man :)

Hey, Banks!

in de clip van Follow you follow me (1978).

Dit is de And then there where 3 tour setup of course.

musical box, fountain of salmacis, the return of the giant hogweed...

Lion of symmetry is grote favoriet hier. Van still vind ik it still takes me by surprise toch wel meesterlijk en echt mooi. Mooi banks piano spel.

Island in the darkness is echt zo vet gewoon...

Hijzelf speelt klein beetje piano verder niets...

Turn it on again, Follow you follow me, Abacab, Throwing it all away.

Lucky Me

My name is unimportant
And my job you could call mean,
But I like the work and I do it well
And that's enough for me.
I think there was a time when I
Could do, and did, much more.
I have dreams in which I captain the ship
And hear the ocean roar.
I've lived alone for all I can remember
Though that only means some six or seven years.
I would rather be nobody else,
I'm happy as I am.
All I need is in my way
And you see no one expects too much from me.
People cry, but no one asks me to advise them.
They want to know but they don't ask me how,
That's for someone else and not for me, I don't know.
Lucky me.
My friends think that I should be trying
To find out who I was.
But I feel that road would bring me pain
And too much would be lost.
How I am is how I'm meant to be now,
And anyhow there's things I see more clearly
Than those whose heads are searching in the clouds to make discoveries,
And maybe fail to see
What's on the ground beneath their feet, not hard to find
People cry, but no one asks me to advise them.
They want to know but they don't ask me how,
That's for someone else and not for me, I don't know.
Lucky me.

The Lie

Thirty odd years before on some grass covered wasteland,
A boy is observed on his own who is watching and playing
He's just made a pact with himself,
If that rabbit over there
Doesn't go down yonder hole,
Let the ground beneath him disappear.
And it runs on past,
Disappears in the distance,
But the earth doesn't move and nobody thought that it would.
He makes bets and pledges again and again.
Sometimes he wins and sometimes he loses, no matter,
Some might call him stupid
To tempt fate in this way.
But he really does believe in it
Each time the rules are made
There he goes again,
'If I never fall for a lady then Let me be famous, let me be wise -
Now this one I like,
It has a different ring,
Instead of something trivial
That's n. serious undertaking.
And so I say to you,
This time I think I'll act,
I'll be the witness to this contract,
I'll. settle everything.
So if you should ever fall in love
You'll not only not he wise,
You'll lose your memory and most of your mind
And I've never been known to lie.
And now he's not really sure if he truly heard someone,
So what if he did, he thinks, for nothing will happen,
And though he seems to shrug it off
lie won't play that game again.
Forever morning after the night before
When even one drop would cause pain.
And the years go by.
The incident is all but forgotten by one
But the other who lives it remembers that innocent fun.

After The Lie

For a while I could not seem to lose this childhood spectre.
I felt others saw it too.
Now I notice a change in the way that people look at me,
And how those people look to me.
I see they're not so clever,
I like them better for it too.
And one still more.
For now I see more clearly
Many things that passed me by.
Like Paul the visionary,
I see things in a different light.
For now I know what course to take.

Now at last I find a meaning in scenes of life
That made no sense to me before.
And the complicated structures of scientific knowledge
Once just mad, they seem so simple now.
And one I've known since childhood, she has new meaning for me too
These things are good.
For now I see more clearly
Many things that passed me by.
Like Paul the visionary,
I see things in a different light.

A Curious Feeling

It's a curious feeling to see the edge receding.
It seems the more I know, the more I don't know. does this ever end?
If you listened to fanatics of the left or right,
You'd think they'd solved it all,
But they don't convince me.
Some statesmen, gurus. men of science and of philosophy.
All have an answer but they won't agree.
So if anybody tells you stories
Of how they're gonna change your world
Be they the Aga Khan, the ex Shah of Iran.
Or the Man from UNCLE,
Say I don't believe you cos I know we don't need you.
In the name of religion or of any politician,
I'm sure we've heard it all.
If races always ran to form they never would he run,
Where would be the fun?
And if ever man could understand everything there was,
He'd have no reason to carry on.
So when anybody tells you stories
Of how they're gonna change your world,
Be they the Aga Khan, the ex Shah of Iran,
Or the Man from UNCLE.
Say come with me then to the Garden of Eden.
Put back our bites from the apple of the Tree of Knowledge,
Be like the beasts again.

You

How strange I never noticed
Your eyes, or the colour of your hair.
It seems to me you grow more beautiful
In every way.
With every single passing day.
Love crept in unseen.
Found me wanting I didn't even have the sense to know
What I was missing,
Of what I was soon to feel for
You the laughter,
You a reason to live.
You the object of all the love I can give,
And all that I possess.
You who meant nothing when I was younger.
It seems a memory from another life.
Did you ever think we'd meet this way,
Feel this way.
Did you really even care?
Some changes I foresaw.
But not this one.
This feeling I would not have understood.
Strange to think
I might have lived my whole life without
You the laughter
You a reason to live.
You the object of all the love I can give.
And all that I possess.
You who meant nothing when I was younger.

Somebody Else's Dream

Too good to last, how those four words ring in my ears
A voice from the past has been heard again,
Whether its real or not, I can't say I care
But my memory's going and my mind is losing its grip.
I'm walking on thinning ice.
Soon I shall be taken down, drowned in blind ignorance
Its hard to bear but harder still
To tell the one I care for.
Please to say love is here today, but its going away, going away
How can I fight a fire that comes from inside myself
That threatens a total end.
So much to lose when I still had so much to learn.
Its hard to bear but harder still
To tell the one I care for.
Please to say love is here today, but its going away, going away
Millions of people won't know what I mean.
None can appreciate somebody else's dream.
Thousands of reasons for staying alive
Explode into fragments,
Dissolve into nothing.
As I prepare for the oncoming night,
Already I feel a creeping coldness chilling my bones.
Dulling my sight and mind.
Soon there shall be only sand where once water flowed.
Nature dies and is reborn, but I shan't weather this coming storm
Not for me to die with children around my bed
After a happy life,
Though rain will fall and the sun won't change in its course
It's hard to bear but harder still
To tell the one I care for,
Please to say love is here today, but its going away, going away
Millions of people won't know what I mean,
None can appreciate somebody else's dream.
Thousands of reasons for staying alive
Explode into fragments.
Dissolve into nothing.
As I prepare for the oncoming night.

For A While

I feel it leading me
Away to I don't know where.
I might be back someday,
But the people and things will change
And no one will remember me then.
Don't need no sympathy,
For soon I'll forget everything.
I feel it fading now,
And I see in the eyes of my love
Tears for how it might have been
It sure felt good for a while.
Yes it was good for a while.
I found somebody to lake my hand
To the promised land of the loved
Now as the night draws in,
A dark with no promise of dawn.
I feel my eyes grow dim,
As I see in the eyes of my love
Tears for how it might have been
It sure felt good for a while.
Yes it was good for a while.
I found somebody to take my hand
To the promised land of the loved

In The Dark

If you know my story now,
Please don't tell
Don't want to hear.
It can only bring me pain.
Maybe one day before I die
I'll open that door,
Maybe I'll cry.
But for now I'll live in the Dark.

A Curious Feeling/The Waters Of Lethe

Tony Banks' A Curious Feeling is probably one work in the Genesis canon most deserving of explanation. As it happens, the album A Curious Feeling, and its song inspired by mythology, The Waters Of Lethe, are inseparably connected.

Originally, the Lethe was one of two rivers in the underworld of Greek and Roman mythology (the other was the more widely known Styx). Dante took this name and used it in his works about the Christian ideas of Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. The Lethe was the river of forgetfulness. Tony is talking about the Lethe in its older peagan mythological sense. The album A Curious Feeling was going to be entitled The Waters Of Lethe (and cf. the name of the painting, 'Wuluwait, The Boatman Of The Dead'), but Tony Banks changed his mind and went with a title that demanded less explanation. In connection with the concept of the album, Tony is quoted by Armando Gallo in his book (written before Duke came out, right after the 1979 solo albums were finished) as saying: "...I originally wanted to call the album The Waters Of Lethe, which is the second river of the Underworld, the River of Forgetfulness, but then I knew I would have to explain to virtually everybody what Leathe [sic] was, so I decided not to. It's a pity in a way because I think it would have been better [and a? my photocopy of the book book has a smudge here] more accurate title and it's more specific. It tells you that it's an album about a person losing his memory. I kept it very ambiguous but 'The Lie' which is the most complex lyric where all the action takes place, is the one that has to be understood to understand the album. The rest of the songs with the exception of 'Someone Else's Dream' work on their own..."

Unfortunately, Tony was proven right, and it is doubtful that even the original title would have helped much. The lyrics are almost too ambiguous for anyone not "in the know" to be able to figure out the concept -- or even that it is upposed to be a concept album – based on just the lyrics. The album was a concept album about someone losing his memory, or in fact his mind as the account below tells (even Tony seems to be waffling on the exact specific concept based on these two quotes).

Finding an occurrence of Banks talking about his album is quite difficult all by itself, and because of that the following quote from an interview conducted by The Waiting Room (brought to the editor's attention by Bill Brink) is presented. It augments the rather slight treatment of the album in Gallo's book. It is one of the longest and most detailed explanations of A Curious Feeling that Banks has ever provided.

TWR: "With the overall storyline, a concept album in 1979 was a brave step, but what made you choose the idea of a man consciously losing his mind as the main concept for the album?"

TB: "Well I have to say that I originally wrote the thing to go with the story Flowers For Algernon, which was a science fiction story that was made into a film called Charlie at some point I think. It's about a man losing his mind and he describes it in his diary. He's a simple person who through some scientific breakthrough is able to get more and more intelligent and he gets more and more intelligent until in the end the treatment stops working and he goes back to where he was at the beginning. It's a very sad story and it made a very good basis for an album. At the time I was doing this music I rang up the guy whose story it was to see if it was OK to use his story. He said, "I have to tell you that there's a musical coming out in London based on this story", and of course I had no idea if the musical was going to be a success or not. I actually went to see the show and it wasn't bad but it ran for a week! I could have easily stuck with it. I wish in a way that I had because some of the Lyrics I could keep the same. Most of the stuff on side two - You and Somebody Else's Dream was very much part of that. The main songs that had to change were The Lie and After The Lie, which obviously was the scene setter and I had to find another way for a person to be losing his mind which was beyond his control or that he felt was beyond his control. So this idea of some sort of mental thing that was probably more in his own mind than any where else which caused him to go through this change. I liked the idea of the songs, the way in which they reflect the idea of this person going through this terrible sense of loss and knowing that he's going and to see what he's feeling at the time. In terms of a concept album, I always felt that Genesis were so out of tune with what was considered mainstream so I really didn't think twice - I wanted to do it. I thought that with The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway the one fault that it had was that the story was much too complicated and therefore didn't allow the music to express the mood of the story because you didn't know what was happening next; it was too episodic, so I wanted something that had a much simpler tale to tell which people could understand. It had moments that I think anyone could relate to the concept of anyone losing their mind in that way and all the things that it would lead to, particularly in terms of relationships. "

The entirety of the memory loss concept seems to be embodied in the following three lines:

So if you should ever fall in love
You'll not only not be wise,
You'll lose your memory and most of your mind

The lines are very explicity to one "in the know", and the significance of them is utterly lost on anyone who does not already know the concept. (Liner notes would have helped listeners orient themselves and would have given them a fighting chance at deducing the concept.) The "not only be wise" part and "most of your mind" seems to corroborate the loosing ones mind concept as well as the memory loss concept. You is apparently the act of falling in love, and Someone Else's dream the aftermath. It is difficult to place After The Lie and A Curious Feeling in this scheme, since they appear chronologically to take place after You.
