FruityLoops Pro 3.0 is one of a few cool software studios in a box. One of the great features of FruityLoops is its ability to trigger external midi devices like Reality/SurReal software synthesizers. Orion Pro 2.5 also has this feature so much that is covered here regarding FruityLoops is applicable to Orion as well.
1. The first thing you want to do when you are beginning a project with FruityLoops and Reality is to pick out your sounds. For the Fruity Demo song below we used a nice female vocal track donated to us by one of our visitors here. You can follow the tips in Tutorial 1 to accomplish what we did. Essentially, the vocal track has been carved up and placed along the keyboard in Reality. We next compiled some interesting synth sounds that we thought would go nicely with the vocal track. Finally, we selected a basic set of 909 samples to act as our drum kit. Everything you hear on the Fruity Demo is just Reality being triggered by FruityLoops.
2. When you open up FruityLoops you will notice that there are several mixer channels available to use. By right clicking on a channel a pop-up menu will allow you to choose.the "midi out" plug-in. In the midi out plug-in you can set your midi channel and program patches. Do not forget to check the "enable midi" box in the options window or you will not hear anything. At this point you should be able to play Reality/SurReal via a midi keyboard (make sure that box is checked) or by using the analog step recorder. On our system (Dell Pentum II, 400mhz, 288MB RAM) latency from a midi keyboard was around 20ms-40ms. Not horrible but not what we were used to. We recommend using the step recorder especially for techno music. FruityLoops has a very cool vibe that is perfect for any type of dance music.
3. Once everything is working just start play back and entering notes. Once we had a pattern we liked we began adding some of the nice tricks FruityLoops can offer.
A. Midi effects: FruityLoops can generate some cool midi effects such as midi delay. With this feature you can create drum flams, double hits, drum rolls, and tripped out breaks perfect for drum 'n' bass. The other nice feature is that these midi delays will also control Reality's audio delay effects (i.e., analog tape delay and Stereo delay) and sync them to the bpm. Way cool!
B. Arpeggiator: FruityLoops also has one of the most comprehensive arpeggiators we have ever had the pleasure to tinker with. All types of scales are supported as well as gate effects. Essential stuff for quality techno music.
When you are done creating several patterns you can arrange these patterns into a complete song in FruityLoops. What is very cool is the fact that you can export your entire song as a midi file for further editing.
The Fruity Demo below was imported into Reality and converted into a SeerMusic file. The Mp3 file was generated from capturing the midi performance to Wave. Download the SeerMusic zip file to hear each track independently and see how the song was constructed. Click on the Mp3 to hear a sample of what we did. We think you will see that Reality works great with products like FruityLoops or Orion because it has a greater capacity than just about any VST or DirectX synth on the market.
