About the 'LiveSampling' on the G2.
The G2 has delay modules that can go to a maximum of 2.7 sec at full 96kHz
speed and 24 bits. These delay modules can be used for a variety of things,
not only for simple echoes. What was demonstrated is the use of capturing
sound live into a delayline and by 'recirculating' the audio use it as a
live phrase sampler. It is a live thing as the content of the delayline can
not be stored as a sample file, of course. But that isn't necessary as it is
explicitly a thing to do live.
The basic trick is to connect the output of a crossfader to the input of a
delayline and connect the output to the first input of the crossfader. The
second input of the crossfader is connected to the audio in. When the
crossfade is controlled by a AHD envelope where the H time is set to the
length of the delayline, triggering the envelope lets the audio from the
input flow into the delayline just until it is full. Setting te A and D
times to a couple of msec allow for smooth and glitchless filling. After the
delayline is filled the audio recirculates endlessly without any
degradation, so a phrase is sampled and looped. The output signal can be
mangled through filtering, distortion or vocoding, or be used fill another
recirculating delayline.
The G2 has a nifty new 'Status' module that outputs the actual voicenumber
of the voice. With this voice number a voice can do different things than
another voice. In the demo patch this Status module is routed to two
multipole controllable switches. One switch 'selects' a gate signal from
several note detector modules while the other switch 'distributes' the
output of the delayline to a multi input mixer. This way the delaylines can
be used in the voice area and allow different phrases to be sampled and
stored in the individual ram for that particular voice. So a four voice
patch can store four phrases 'on top of each other'. Whatever you do with
the sampled phrases is of course totally up to you. In the demo patch I used
another recirculating delayline in the CVA/FX section where a 'bellshaped'
lfo signal is used to 'insert' snippets of sounds from the phrases at more
or less random places in this extra recirculator. The effect is that the
phrases get warbled in a rhythmic way, changing all the time as audio is
inserted and removed from the recirculator. Big fun to play with...
Well, just to give a little idea of all the new and musically very useful
possibilities the G2 RAM offers. The nice thing is that there are different
sorts of delays. For one there is a standard ready to use pingpong delay.
But there are also bare bones delays, where the patching around the delay
module allows for everything that your imagination and creativity can come
up with. The rhythmic insertion and deletion of snippets of audio in a
recirculating delay or 'phrase sampler' is pretty obvious. You can time this
with an event sequencer with the event buttons assigned to the G2 frontpanel
pushbuttons instead of an LFO or note detector, or... Having the relation of
the delay length and the insertion tempo slightly odd creates very
interesting rhythmically shifting patterns in the audio.
Btw guys, I fully realize my privilized position of now and then being able
to check stuff out on a demo G2. Working with the G2 is quite an experience,
and I really wish for all of you to share that expercience as soon as
possible. For my own stuff the combination of a G2 and MPC1000 seems to be
all that I need and and as soon as possible I will make that my new live
setup. You can imagine what an aweful setup that is, and also quite
portable. I've never been a fan of using computers on stage and this setup
will definitely work for me without having to use a laptop. Of course I have
to dump some other stuff, as it is a hefty 3000 euro investment. But one
that will keep me happy for several years, I guess. I don't really know what
else I would need, except for the odd WX5 and Theremin antenna I use. But
the Theremin I got interfaces nicely on the pedal input, just like I use it
on the pedal input of the current NM right now. :-)
